The Thursday Edition--Page 5

Back in February Arianna Huffington wrote a piece for The Huffington Post detailing John McCain's descent from a seemingly honest centrist to a desperate panderer to the extremists in his party.

And the direction of his campaign, I believe, has led to an atmosphere where it's 'okay' to show your fear driven hatred of folks who are 'not like you'. It's also apparently 'okay' to remain ignorant and to proudly profess your ignorance.

Or to be blatantly racist

And just this morning it happened in my town.

So sad--this town is not an ignorant backwater but there are some who continue to be ruled by fear.

So I'll vote my conscience on Tuesday morning and my conscience will be clear as I cast my ballot for Barack Obama.

Well At Least It's Blue

Hey y'all

Well I knew it was coming but I guess I pushed it to the back of my mind.

The day that my Kentucky Wildcats would take on Brad's Florida Gators in football.

It happens every year. It happened last year. The result is usually the same---if you'll recall I had a BET with Brad last year and I had to pay up---which I did in fine fashion I might add.

I bought Brad a UK hoodie as one of his trivia prizes last year. He wore it all the time last fall and winter.

AND Brad has been a great sport about cheering on the Cats since he moved here---he goes all out when we go to games.

But we also watch and cheer on the Gators in this house now. And I'm fine with that---it's not like they are Louisville;-).

But today---today they play each other.

Now being a long time Kentucky Football fan is something akin to being a Red Sox fan ---well without the national championship---or maybe a Cubs fan. You cheer, you have success, you have gut wrenching failures, you adjust, you hope. But you always Bleed Blue.

So while I am realistic about our chances in The Swamp---we have a kick ass defense but our offense is struggling---I'll cheer them on and hope for the best.

And even though I never expected Brad to wear UK Blue today and I knew he had ordered a new Gator sweatshirt I didn't expect this fucker to show up THIS MORNING on the doorstep.

If that's not an omen I don't know what is.

EDIT: Brad says Go Gators!

Tripping The Light Fantastic

Hey y'all

I meant to get a post up yesterday. I meant to do a radio show.

I didn't get either done because I'm still SICK. Ugh.

Turns out I have more than a simple ankle biter virus. I have a sinus infection plus the ankle biter virus. SO nine days in and I am still coughing my lungs up, head full of goo, ears ringing and generally yucky. I do have drugs now though so they ought to be getting this under control in time for me to make a full recovery to attend the Neverwas Fair.

I found this in my inbox and thought I'd share. Looks like the found a replacement couple for the one they lost to injury on Dancing With The Stars. All I can say is Oh My!

Stray Bullets III

Hey y'all

I've been trying to veg out so I can kick this nasty bug I have. I've had a bit of a relapse though and my Dextromethorphan soaked brain is bouncing all over the place. You are forewarned;-)

  • Halloween costumes I and II came together over the weekend. We have a party next Saturday here so I needed a second costume. I had an idea but it needed something to really pull it together. I found it at WalMart. Seriously. Not in their 'costumes' but off the regular rack of stuff. It was $30 less than the piece I'd seen like this at the costume shop. So if you still need some help for your Halloween look you might want to check them out.

  • It was a damn good sports weekend here at Bliss Manor. The Kentucky Wildcats staged a dramatic last minute comeback to defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks and Jimmie Johnson won his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the year and extended his lead in the Chase for the Cup with only four races left. Of course the Red Sox dug deep and stretched the ALCS to seven but will have to regroup for next season.

  • We have had some interesting goings on in the cul de sac of late---late night break ups----car repossessions at 5 AM---daytime confabs complete with mystery beverages in red plastic cups. It's almost sad that it's gotten chilly enough to close the windows cause you never know what you are going to hear at 4:30 in the morning around here.

  • The topic for tomorrow's radio show--provided I have enough voice and won't cough through the whole fricking thing---is 'babies as accessories'. I'd be please to entertain all viewpoints and I'll put up a proper post promoting the show tomorrow.

  • If you haven't seen the Colin Powell endorsement of Obama I suggest you give it a look.

  • And the SNL skits were pretty darn good on Saturday---the Alec Baldwin - Sarah Palin exchange was a hoot.

I'm off to my fortuitously scheduled doctor's appointment. It was supposed to be for a routine physical--my first with a 'regular' doctor. I figured I'd get one as I am approaching 50 and everyone keeps yapping at me about it. Since I am sick this should be a better chance for me to evaluate. Here's hoping he's a keeper.

The Thursday Edition--Page 4

Hey y'all

I'm still sick.

I stayed home and worked out of the house yesterday and today. Yesterday I was miserable with a throbbing head and amazing amounts of ---well you don't really want to know. I worked pretty much all day though--getting almost no rest. So today I had almost no voice and when I made myself talk I sounded like Madeleine Kahn in Blazing Saddles. Not that that is a horrible thing but it hurt to do it. I got a little more rest but felt awful when I woke. A hot shower, clean hair and my baby taking care of me helped although here I sit unable to sleep because my throat hurts.

At least I am not coughing--well not this second anyway;-)

We of course watched the debate tonight. Can anyone explain to me why it took this long to have an actual 'debate' where excellent questions were asked and the candidates could truly speak to us? Anyone? Bob Schieffer did a superior job.

You'll have to pardon me but I thought the "Joe Plumber" gimmick a bit stale. McCain did make a point with it, albeit a sort of fumbling one, but Obama handled it well. After that it just got more desperate each time McCain went back to it because Obama began using it too. He used it to get the 'gotcha' moment about health care.

I thought it was refreshing of Schieffer to ask them about the negative items and make them deal with it face to face. McCain really seemed to struggle with himself on that one. He personally took on the negative folks at his rally but could not answer why Palin didn't address it at hers.

Does anyone know if McCain knows that Palin's kid has Down's Syndrome not autism? Does she have a kid that's autistic too?

I'm tired of this mess. I'm tired of being bombarded with moronic scare tactics.

I watched a video earlier this week---a McCain Palin supporter showed up at a rally proudly displaying a monkey with an Obama sticker across it's head and calling it "Little Hussein". But that wasn't racist according to him.

I caught a post in my Reader where the blogger proudly displays her sons' Halloween costume---an Obama mask complimented with devil horns, tail and pitchfork. But I'm sure that's 'all in good fun'.

I saw John McCain put 'air quotes' around the word 'health' of the mother when talking about opposing exceptions to late term abortion bans. He sneered and termed support for a woman's health "an extreme position".

This is from a man who called his wife a 'cunt' in public.

I'm sure the spin will be fierce.

Sick

Hey y'all

I have been felled by the germs of an ankle biter and snuffling and coughing and yucky!

I was going to do a show tonight about babies as accessories--no--not to criminal activity but as something you just 'have' to bring to a football game in 90 degree heat.

And when I say babies I mean babies--little ones --actual children--under 8 months or so.

Seriously--I'd LOVE to hear someone justify that.

Anyone willing to try or just chime in can do so next week at 8 PM. Tonight's show is off cause I am just too puny and croaky and cranky. And Brad will be busy taking care of me;-)

Sadly even though I am in the bed I have been working via email and chat most of the morning.

I'll be around the blogosphere after lunch and a nap.

I hope.

Talking Town Hall

Hey y'all

Tonight it's the Town Hall Preview Party on TurnbabyTalks at 8 PM ET on BlogTalkRadio.

You can join in the fun by clicking on that lovely button at the top of this post. The chat has been lively and should be no different tonight. You can call in at 646-716-8102 and share your opinions about the mess that we call Presidential campaigning, should political ads be held to a 'truth in advertising standard and whether there should be a 'talent portion' in future Vice Presidential debates.

We already know Palin's answer to the last one----You betcha!

The Thursday Edition--Page 3

Hey y'all

Well tonight is the single debate for the Vice Presidential candidates. I don't expect we'll see the likes of this moment though.......

I think a lot of folks will tune in just to see if it is as much of a train wreck by Palin as the interviews with Katie Couric were last week. I doubt it will be as bad as they've had Palin in 'debate camp' in Arizona. Guess she's gathering more 'foreign policy experience' by looking at Mexico.

Meanwhile Joe Biden is all excited about the possibility that FDR might watch.

Yes, I did go there.

Politicians often make mistakes when faced with speaking too much in pressured situations.

I do however draw a distinction between grasping for some historical reference to make a dramatic point, as Biden did with misspeaking that FDR addressed the nation on TV when the stock market fell in 1929, and making nonsensical claims trying to justify yourself on the ticket--Palin saying she has foreign policy experience because Alaska is next to Russia. If you haven't seen the video here is a link and

here's the transcript ...

COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land-- boundary that we have with-- Canada. It-- it's funny that a comment like that was-- kind of made to-- cari-- I don't know, you know? Reporters--

COURIC: Mock?

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia--

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We-- we do-- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where-- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is-- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to-- to our state.

So it's no wonder that John McCain said this yesterday on NPR....

NPR: Given what you’ve said Senator, is there an occasion where you could imagine turning to Governor Palin for advice in a foreign policy crisis.

MCCAIN: I’ve turned to her advice many times in the past, I can’t imagine turning to Senator Obama or Senator Biden because they’ve been wrong. They were wrong about Iraq, wrong about Russia –

NPR: But would you turn to Governor Palin?

MCCAIN: I certainly wouldn’t turn to them, and I’ve already turned to Governor Palin particularly on energy issues and I’ve appreciated her background and knowledge on that and many other issues.

*sigh*

I applauded columnist Kathleen Parker last week for her column recognizing Palin's glaring inadequacy and asking her to step down. It seems this has made Parker, a respected conservative columnist, a target of death threats and viscious hate mail from her very own people. This is from her column yesterday....

"""Such extreme partisanship has a crippling effect on government, which may be desirable at times, but not now. More important in the long term is the less tangible effect of stifling free speech. My mail paints an ugly picture and a bleak future if we do not soon correct ourselves.

The picture is this: Anyone who dares express an opinion that runs counter to the party line will be silenced. That doesn't sound American to me, but Stalin would approve.

Readers have every right to reject my opinion. But when we decide that a person is a traitor and should die for having an opinion different from one's own, we cross into territory that puts all freedoms at risk. (I hear you, Dixie Chicks.)

I'm sure it is coincidence that, upon the Palin column's publication, a conservative organization canceled a speech I was scheduled to deliver in a few days. If I were as paranoid as the conspiracy theorists are, I might wonder whether I was being punished for speaking incorrectly.

Unfortunately, that's the way one begins to think when party loyalty is given a higher value than loyalty to bedrock principles.""""

I will be tuned in--how about you?

We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Groping To Bring You This Very Important Message

Hey y'all

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I snagged these graphics from a free use site--feel free to grab them and promote the fight for a cure and routine checkups/exams for early detection.

I had not had a mammogram in quite a while (years--several--a lot). I HATE them--I have dense breast tissue and they always have to take two views and they REALLY have to mush them. UGH. I swear if guys had to have their tits or nuts smashed once a year we'd ALREADY have a different method.

So I put it off after the first couple. I'd always go for my annual and get examined there and I am very good about doing self exams. I'm well aware of how my breasts normally feel so I'd be inclined to say I'd find something unusual. And this is how I rationalized not going for so long.

I have a lot of breast cancer in my maternal family---grandmother, aunt, cousin and my sister Lorraine. So I should have been going.

Brad finally got me to actually make the appointment and go. I had to wait a week for the results to come by mail. I'm clear but I'll keep checking and going as it really does help to catch it early. My sister is living proof of that.
