I'd Like To Use One Of My Lifelines, Katie

Hey y'all

This opened Saturday NIght Live last night.

The scariest thing is that some of the comedy routine made more sense than the actual interview answers.

TurnbabyTalks on Tuesday night at 8 PM on BlogTalkRadio will feature the upcoming Vice Presidential debate as well as whatever other news is of the moment.

The Kentucky Wildcats kicked ass as they should have. Cosmetologists just aren't as tough as they used to be.

We are kinda in mourning over the Gators' loss. But as I said to Brad I don't think it eliminates them from contention for a National Championship. LSU had a defeat last year and won it. And who defeated them you ask? Kentucky;-)

In our ESPN Fantasy Football league Turnbaby Tackles Brad's Boston Mobsters are going up against my Southern Sirens. He's been trying to get in my head about my roster but I am at peace with my choices*grin*

We'll also be cheering on Jimmie Johnson as he goes after the lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Race for the Chase starting from the poll at Kansas.

The Thursday Edition--Page 2

Hey y'all

I had planned to write about something else but in sticking to my original idea for these posts I must go with the current financial crisis and how the politicos are dealing with it.

Seems McCain is afraid to debate Obama on Friday night because McCain says he has to go and take care of the financial mess we are in. I might understand this if he were the incumbent--then his call for a brief halt might carry some real weight. However he positions himself as a 'maverick' and one who is 'out of the Washington loop'. Yet his call to stop the campaign and "meet until this crisis is resolved" smacks of a Washington insider's penchant for doing deals behind closed doors and then presenting US with the bill.

I don't know if either of these men will have any better answer by Friday night than what is being proposed. But I want to hear their thoughts on the subject---from them directly. Yes --I want to see this particular bit of sausage made.

This ridiculous request for a 'time out' in campaigning brought to my mind the quote from the musical '1776' . When called upon to cast the deciding vote to allow debate about the question of American independence from Great Britain, Representative Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island has this to say....

""“Well, I’ll tell ya. In all my years, I’ve never seen, heard nor smelled an issue that was so dangerous it couldn’t be talked about. Hell yes, I’m for debating anything!”"

I have to agree.

*****************************

And now for something completely different*GRIN*

So many folks were quite complimentary of this photograph and asked if I had any more in the series. I hesitated to post the 'under' shot because it does show some skin but what the hey. Here you go.....

Randall Bramblett at Natasha's

Hey y'all

I still have a song or ten still playing in my mind after last night's simply wonderful concert by Randall Bramblett at Natasha's. That's Mr. Bramblett himself tuning up before the show.

He did two 'acoustic' sets with longtime bandmate Mike Hines. Sorry for the crap pictures. I didn't take the camera as I wanted to just focus on the experience. I succumbed to using the cell to get these.

In between sets Randall talked to folks as he signed CDs. Not wanting to be all 'fan girly' I patiently waited and as he turned to me I remarked "Well I guess I didn't get the note". He got right away what I meant as both he and I were wearing green long sleeved shirts and black jeans. (Yes I know--more evidence of my supreme dorkiness) We chatted about The Oxford American --it's a wonderful magazine that does a "Southern Music" issue each year and i first heard his music there---and he signed a CD for both Brad and me. He was open and genuine and gracious. I somehow managed not to squeeeee.;-)

The music was far better than in the videos from the record store I posted yesterday. He played songs from every CD and wowed the crowd. Hearing some of these with just guitars for the first time really emphasized his often brilliant lyrics.

This CD is a compilation of two of his albums from the 70s that can't be found on vinyl anymore.

After a standing O he did a Howling Wolf song encore that was fun and rowdy and a great way to end the evening.

I'm just thrilled that I got to see him and that I got to see him with Brad. I can't wait for the time when we can see the whole band because they rock and he'll play sax.

I'm just in such a good mood----being madly in love and sharing moments of joy does that to a girl.

Now It's Tomorrow

Hey y'all

I won't be having a live radio show tonight--the lovely button will take you to a very good show I did with Alan Levy--the CEO of BlogTalkRadio--earlier this year.

Instead Brad and I will go downtown to Natasha's Cafe to see Randall Bramblett. I've posted about him a few times one of which is here. He is---to quote our local music critic Walter Tunis--- "the greatest Southern songwriter you've never heard of." And that remains a puzzlement to me because Randall Bramblett is just brilliant. I first heard him a long time ago on an early Oxford American music CD. I'll be posting about their upcoming tenth in a few.

Go HERE and listen to a few songs--my current favorite is "Used to Rule The World" but I also love "Sun Runs" and "Blue Road" and, from his last CD "Beautiful Blur" which I used in THIS post a while back.

When asked about his writing he said this....

" It's like writing about living in a painful world but always looking at the beauty of it, too. I can't fully explain what influences like that are('that' being the drought in the South right now)except that it's my experience you see all these terrible things happening in life, all these awful things that can leave you so discouraged. But, god, you look out at the world and it's just beautiful.

So what do you do?

You keep going."

He won't have his band with him this time--it will be an acoustic set he's been doing at some smaller venues with Mike Hines. I. CANNOT. WAIT.

This is "Sun Runs'

To Wii Or Not To Wii

Hey y'all

To Wii or not to Wii---yes that was the burning question we faced this weekend.

We have a lot keeping us busy and we very much enjoy our R & R time now. With the college football season in full swing, concerts, karaoke, fantasy baseball, fantasy football, reading and MobWars, Elven Blood and Wordscraper on Facebook did we really need one more 'shiny thing'?

Still...

We both love gaming but neither of us has had a game system for a while. I still have my old Nintendo but I'm afraid to even plug it into a TV for fear it will melt it down .

And honestly the stuff on Crackbook had only whetted our appetites for a higher level of escapist fun. Brad has been checking into which of the new systems ---XBox, Playstation or Wii --- would be the best for us. I had not been inclined to purchase a system with five million buttons you have to push in ten million different sequences just to pick up a sword. I exaggerate but you get my point.

Adam mentioned to Brad that the Wii wasn't like that but more 'intuitive'. Hmmmm.

So during our very fun shopping adventures on Saturday we wandered in to Best Buy and watched the eight year olds play Guitar Hero singing "I Hate Myself for Loving You" *rolls eyes* while waiting for the Wii demonstrator to free up.

I picked up the 'wheel' controller and within a few seconds was flying around a Mario Kart track. Sure I killed him a few times but I was giggling and laughing and pretty much hooked.

Of course the Best Buy guy said they didn't have any in stock but added "If you ever see them in our Sunday ad then we'll have quite a few to sell." He could have just done the courteous *nudge nudge wink wink* there because sure enough when I flipped through their ad yesterday there was the Wii for a right nice price.

So we said OUI WII!

So if you don't hear from me for a bit*giggling*

The Thursday Edition -Page 1

Hey y'all

My third year of blogging---it's funny to think of it like that.

When I first started I didn't even know how to hyperlink.

Now I am preparing to switch templates and then take a big deep breath and move to my own domain. Wish me luck that I don't muck it up.

I did not have a blog during the last presidential election although I was very into reading political and politically minded blogs. Now that I have my own platform I am going to use it. This will by no means become a 'political' blog but you'll know where I stand and I am open to all intelligent discourse.

I've decided to devote 'The Thursday Edition" to my take on whatever topic--not just politics-- is uppermost in my mind on a given week. I expect that these posts will run a pretty far reaching gamut as I do like to poke about in so many things. I will link to others with interesting things to say as well.

I expect to have a lot of fun with it.

Speaking of fun, if you are hear looking for HNT you'll need to email me @turnberrybaby@yahoo.com for more details.

Comfort = Food and Friends

Hey y'all

Today is the second anniversary of this blog. And tonight joining me at 8 PM on TurnbabyTalks is the responsible party, Mr. VinnyBond of Bond's Big Leather Couch and regular Ringmaster of the Chat at Doc Blogstein's Radio Happy Hour every Tuesday at 9 PM ET on BlogTalkRadio. I started blogging because he did and then it all snowballed from there ;-)

We are planning on an evening filled with talk of food--comfort food --- party food---tailgate food--- we'll even give out advice and recipes.

And I am certain he'll mention that his fantasy team whipped up on my fantasy team this past weekend. But we still have a way to go on the season so no worries for my Sirens.

You can find us and listen and play in the chat by clicking that lovely button at the top of this post. You can CALL IN by dialing 646-716-8102. If you can't make it live you can always hear the archived shows by using the player in my sidebar.

I hope y'all can make it.

Things That Make Me Go Squeeeeee!

Hey y'all

What a fun filled weekend we had. And here it is the weekend again and I've been so swamped with work I haven't even posted about the last one yet. I guess that qualifies for an 'Oh My'*smile*

There are many things making me as happy as a pig in slop. I have to have appropriate gravitas so much of the time so I think it's perfectly fine to be silly and all 'squeeeeeee' when I want to and have the right place to do so.

And this blog is nothing if not that;-)

The Kentucky Wildcats won their home opener against Norfolk State. Who doesn't love cupcakes?;-) Brad was resplendent in Wildcat blue and festive red Chuck Taylors.......

This was his first time attending a college game and tailgating. We bought a 'cornhole' game and it was the first time for both of us with that.*giggle* It's funny--even though there is an American Cornhole Association when they sell the game at Walmart the set is called "The Official College Bean Bag Toss Game" LOL.

I won three games to one just in case you wanted to know* hee hee*

The Florida Gators won their game although we had a devil of a time finding out about that which was weird. They usually announce SEC scores and some others of both national and local interest during breaks in the game. They posted some but were really lagging.

After the game we were still fired up so we set off to try karaoke at the bowling alley on the other side of town. We were greeted by pretty much the same group of folks as at Southland Lanes. There are a couple of unique characters whom I'll describe in another post. I guess we are officially regulars cause the host was joking with us by name. It was a blast and we finished our fun packed Saturday with a White Castle run around 1 AM. There's nothing like sliders in bed. Yum OH!

Sunday was a good bit of yard work---there have been so many things done to the house that the back yard looks really rough. We put some lipstick on that pig though ;-) as I was having the group of girls I went to law school with over on Tuesday. We sweated it out and then settled in for football and racing.

Jimmie Johnson won at Richmond for consecutive wins going into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup which begins this weekend with the race at Loudon NH. The last few laps produced a great duel with Tony Stewart and Jimmie's victory left Smoke throwing a temper tantrum in his car. LOL

I am LOVING the fantasy football Brad set up on ESPN. The league is called Turnbaby Tackles and I'll do an appropriately linky post soon. It's so much more fun than I thought it was going to be and I am really into it. ESPN makes it so enjoyable even if you are a fantasy football newby like me.

And on a more serious note....

My blog is coming up on its two year anniversary. During that time I've pretty much shied away from politics.

I can't anymore.

And so I had to post this--IT IS NOT SAFE FOR WORK unless you are wearing headphones and lack a sense of humor.

This is an irreverent video--clever and wise in how the media attempts to manipulate what the populace sees and uses a word that is extremely offensive but the point is so well made that I just have to post it.

I've got the most SPLENDID. SUB. EVAH. lined up to do the talking tonight at 8 PM ET on BlogTalkRadio as my love, Brad, mans the mic for TurnbabyTalks.

Downstairs I'll be entertaining a bevy of beautiful lawyers while upstairs he rants and raves for you all.

You can listen and play in the chat by clicking that lovely button at the top of this post. If you can't listen live you can join me in listening to the show in archives by hitting that player in my sidebar.

He's going gonzo this time--no notes---so it ought to be something to hear.

Of Wildcats and 'Syreens'

Hey y'all

You'll have to bear with me cause IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN THE BLUEGRASS!!

The University of Kentucky Wildcats home opener is today and in less than 6 hours Brad will attend his first college football game and his first tailgate.

Through the kindness of a friend I managed to secure a parking pass so we can tailgate from Belle without having to be 'floaters'. We are taking the "Official College Beanbag Toss"---yeah that's Cornhole in the real world. There will be pictures and video of this adventure rest assured.

We'll also be keeping an eye on the University of Florida/Miami game as it EDIT *kicks* off *two* hours after the UK game does.

And we are in the middle of the first weekend of the ESPN Fantasy Football league Turnbaby Tackles. My team is called the Southern Sirens after the lovely trio from Oh Brother Where Art Thou. And here's how we'll roll.....

There'll be a lot of 'We thought you was a toad"*giggling* after my picks propel the Sirens to victory!

I'm off to get us ready.

GO BIG BLUE!!

Sportsmanlike Conduct

Hey ya'll

It was a BANNER sports weekend here at Bliss Manor.

The University of Kentucky Wildcats traveled west on 1-64 and defeated Louisville 27-2.

The University of Florida spanked Hawaii in the Gators' home opener.

The Boston Red Sox took 2 out of 3.

Brad's fantasy baseball team made it to the 'playoffs'.

And Jimmie Johnson clinched a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup by winning his third race of the year at Fontana.

Shew--I need another long weekend just to catch my breath.

Brad started a Fantasy Football league on ESPN. I was reticent at first but now I'm really getting into it. There's already some trash talking going on amongst the participants. More on that later.

We are also doing the pool Southern Sage is doing each week for college games. He picks 10 games and you just email him your picks by the deadline. It's fun and free and going into the Tennessee/UCLA game tonight I am 7 of 9 in my picks.

Finally, another month of trivia has come and gone on FunTrivia. I play several tournaments there and did quite well as you can see....

All you have to do is play the TurnbabyTalks Trivia Challenge every day and you have a shot at a $50 Amazon gift card. It's fun and really does take less than a minute.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day off.
