Arrogance

Hey y'all

Should you choose to put your credibility out there for the world to see and you chose to defend it by suing someone for defamation here's a tip. Make sure your skeletons are not damaged souls desperately trying to make a comeback in a vicious industry that chews up and spits out the weak once it's milked them dry.

"They belittle you so that you feel like you need them. So that you feel like you have to have them. And you just get lost. I mean, that's the only way I can explain it to you, is I was just so terribly lost. Once you get down that far, it's hard to pick yourself back up."

Mindy McCready on Larry King Live in 2006 speaking of her relationship with Billy McKnight who tried to kill her in a drug fueled rage but with whom she went on to have a baby.

Knowing what a train wreck this woman's life has been--he's helped pay her legal bills apparently--- and knowing you've been 'involved' with her for over ten years all the while being married would cause any normal person to pause before they start fingerpointing about who is truthful and who isn't.

Obviously Roger Clemens is not a normal person. He doesn't think of himself in that way either. And I don't pretend at all to know what his wife thinks of it--quite honestly that is between them and not for me to judge. If they had an 'arrangement' about these other women---at least two more have been identified--- he was 'involved' with so be it.

His arrogance in holding himself out as a bastion of credibility is what I have a problem with.

I think a jury just might as well.

Turnbaby Cooks!

Hey y'all

I was in the mood to cook last night and -lucky you- I was also in the mood to share. Sometimes I know what I want to make but last night I just threw some things together inspired by the first Vidalia onions of the season and a jar of sun dried tomatoes.

Here is the mis en place: one small Vidalia sweet onion, sliced thinly; one small jar marinated sun dried tomatoes, chopped; one red bell pepper, chopped; one bunch asparagus, sliced diagonally; 5 cloves garlic, minced; 2 sprigs fresh thyme and oregano; dried basil @ 1 tsp; dried ground corriander@ 1 tsp; and a glass of red wine for the cook.

I love using boneless country style pork 'ribs'---they are cut from the shoulder end of the pork loin and are nicely marbled so they stay moist and soooo tastey. It's an extremely versatile and inexpensive cut of meat. I cut them into chunks and dusted them with the ground corriander then sauteed in EVOO until golden. I've got a pot of water going for the cavatappi which is a corkscrew hollow pasta--one of my favorite shapes.

Once the meat was seared I removed it and tossed in the onions and deglazed the pan with some cooking sherry---when I use 'cooking' wine I don't use salt until the end. After the onions were translucent everything else went in the pan, asparagus last to keep it from over cooking.

I used about a cup of cooking sherry plus about a cup of the pasta water (this makes a great 'thickening' agent for a light sauce) and reduced until it was enough to lightly coat the pasta.

Meat back in and well drained pasta tossed until covered. I drizzled a little EVOO over to finish.

Into the bowl and topped off with freshly grated parmigiano- reggiano , fresh ground peppercorn blend and freshly ground sea salt. And of course a nice glass of red ;-) Mangia!

This turned out very yummy and will definitely go in the book. If anybody wants a more specific recipe email me. You could easily substitute chicken breasts/thighs and or shrimp in this.

Road Trip

Hey y'all

I just got back from a wonderful *sigh* trip. Driving alone on the highway for five and a half hours makes me appreciate a few things....

---Belle. She's fast, powerful, comfortable and safe. And she looks good doing it.

---The McDonald's/gas station combo. These are brilliant because I can pull up and park to go piddle. Then I back up to the pump, fill up the car and then it's through the drive through for food and I'm off. It's brilliant.

---Really good road music. On the way down I dug out my live CD of Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men. Driving bluesy rock with brilliant lyrics, killer guitar and oh my god how can he do that piano. On the way back it was The Blasters (his band with his brother Phil), Shelby Lynne, Green Day and Edible Red. Yum.

---People who know how to DRIVE.
*turning on rant mode*

Look, highway driving is serious business when you are piloting a 4000 lb + vehicle(Belle is proud of her weight ;-)) and I take it that way. I'm not a nervous driver but I am defensive. I like to have adequate stopping distance and I always have my lights on and use signals where appropriate.

So it really frustrates me when people who are obviously ignorant or afraid or stupid get out on the highway in their 4000 lb vehicles and put me and others at risk---you know who they are......

....the spaz speeder who thinks that the distance between me and the car in front of me is just big enough to dart into when we are all going about 85 mph and he is doing about 100

....the scaredy cat who barely does the minimum speed bottling folks up and causing a real hazard on a major highway. I went past a couple of these folks and was almost blinded by the glare of the knuckles on the steering wheel.

....and finally--the "I'm going the speed limit so I'm not getting over" assholes--omg--if I had a rocket launcher that would vaporize these fuckers the world would be a lot safer today. Yes everyone can have that moment in the left lane when you are passing a slower line of cars and traffic stacks up because folks are traveling at the same rate of speed. But puhleese after the FIFTH car in a row passes you on the right AND you are given LOTS of chances to get in the right hand lane do us all a favor and GET THE FUCK OVER BITCH! Shew that felt good. This happened more times than I can count yesterday and it nearly caused two or three accidents because it makes the spaz speeders more risky than they normally are and that is not a good thing.

*rant mode off*

Sorry I just had to get that off my chest*giggling*

My trip was so awesome*grin* I am way behind on my reads and probably drifting into mark all as read territory in my Reader (it's pushing 500) but I'll see. I'm still kinda floating and trying to get the orange Cheetos stain off my fingers.*giggling*

What Might Have Been

Hey y'all

I'm lucky enough to live in a gorgeous place and one of the gems of Lexington is The Lexington Cemetery. It's serene and beautiful and I've become fascinated with taking photographs there.

The ruined beauty of some of the monuments draws me in immediately but I also look at the inscriptions and epitaphs because, once upon a time, we as a people would express ourselves so well in the written word.

This is not really a monument to D. Frederick and Julia Amelia Wolf. Yes their names are inscribed here and they undoubtedly erected this memorial. However I do not believe they intended to make it about themselves. For D. Frederick, born in 1832, and Julia Amelia, born in 1833, did not engrave their names on the front of this marker. Their names are on the back of this four sided granite remembrance.

This memorial is for their children.

Charles Edward, born when Julia was 23, D. Frederick 22

William Frederick, born when Julia was 25, D. Frederick 24

Ella Sophia, born when Julia was 29, D. Frederick, 28

and

Elsa Louise, born when Julia was 39, D. Frederick 38.

The epitaph inscribed on the front reads----"Of all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these: it might have been." This is a quote from John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "Maud Muller" although it is not credited there.

Elsa was only 4 years old when the oldest child died--her parents only 43 and 42 respectively. Within 5 years her two other siblings were dead. I can only surmise that this memorial was erected by the Wolfs between 1881 and 1886 since Elsa is not on the front with the others but is alone on the left side.

D. Frederick lived only ten years more.

But Julia outlived her youngest child by 31 years.

When I come here to photograph her, for I firmly believe it is Julia who stands here with laurel wreath in hand, I wonder if she stood where I now stand and thought about what 'might have been' for her and for her children. I wonder if the words of their epitaph were chosen by her or by D. Frederick.

Did she relish every second she spent with her children when they were here or did she live the rest of her days wearing the 'weeds' of 'might have been'?

I like to think she lived her life, remembering but also being in the present. It's poignant and intriguing and I wonder about her as I capture the beauty that remains.

If You Must You Must

Hey y'all

Ah the meme--sometimes you just gotta steal one and let 'er rip. This one's going around but I snatched it from Trav who snatched it from Ian who snatched it from....I don't know and I'm too lazy to go see right now*giggling* So away we go.......

You're feeling: MORE that a bit irritated because Blogger is finally letting me upload photos but I don't have enough time to finish that post today.

To your left: The 'babies' curled up and snoring those sweet little pug snores.

On your mind: Hot steamy mind blowing sex.

Last meal included: Lean Cuisine Spaghetti with Meat Sauce. That was breakfast;-)

You sometimes find it hard to: get everything done that needs doing right now.

The weather: Gorgeous spring day.

Something you have a collection of: Coin silver and well...fuck it....SHOES!

A smell that cheers you up: Pand0ra's Raspberry and Violet soap.

A smell that can ruin your mood: Cigarette smoke.

How long since you last shaved: Yesterday morning.

The current state of your hair: Long, messy from sleep, pulled into a pony tail.

The largest item on your desk/workspace (not computer): Laptop Writing Desk.

Your skill with chopsticks: I can pick up a single grain of rice as well as an egg roll. I have an affinity for it it seems.

Which section to head for first in a bookstore: New fiction.

Something you're craving: Hot steamy mind blowing sex---you knew that answer right?

Your general thoughts on the presidential race: I shall vote in November--I'm not going to like it but I shall vote.

How many times have you been hospitalized this year: None.

Favorite place to go for a quiet moment: The Lexington Cemetery--which you shall see if I ever get Blogger to fucking cooperate--arrrggghh. Driving around the countryside in Belle is a pretty cool way to just let it all go. Sitting on the back deck with the puppies is nice as well.

You've always secretly thought you'd be a good: doctor.

Something that freaks you out a little: Being stuck in traffic on bridges.

Bullet The Blue Sky

Hey y'all

While I've managed to keep up with my unstated goal of posting everyday it's been difficult to get around and read other's posts. That's frustrating to me because I find greater pleasure in blogging when I can interact with other bloggers on their posts as well as my own. This isn't the post I planned for today but fucking Blogger won't let me upload the photos I need and since it is a pictorial essay it's pretty much imperative to have those.

So you all are stuck with Turnbaby's first bullet post!

I think the Thursday Thirteen meme I used to routinely do could be called a 'bullet' post but since those were themed I'm not counting them. You are now stuck with my random thoughts--oh my.

  • Fucking Blogger---GAH just as I am settling in to going live with my dot com on Blogger I run into this photo upload issue--again. They did a 'fix' on one part of the photo upload feature which has totally fucked the regular upload feature. It's been 4 days now. They are still 'working on it'. I am NOT a happy camper.

  • I Feel The Earth Move---Well for more than one reason ;-) but specifically Friday morning at 5:37 AM I was snuggled in a king sized bed in yummy hotel sheets all alone(boo) on the 9th floor of the Galt House in Louisville KY when the whole building began to shake. I remember thinking--'this is an earthquake' and 'is it going to stop?'. It did and I nestled back down in the sheets and drifted off.

  • You Know What Really Sucks?----Going to a seminar and counting on being able to access the internet the entire day and being shut out--completely and utterly--and the folks running the thing being stubbornly unwilling to fix their wireless network.

  • When to Hold 'Em---I spent yesterday afternoon playing Texas Hold 'Em with my poker club. It's sorta like a book club in that we get together once a month at someone's house except we drink and play cards;-) . I had not been playing very well for the last few months but yesterday I was very happy to finish 2nd in both 14 person tourneys. I lost the first time to a pair of 3s on the river and the second time to a pair of 2s. *sigh* But i came away with $84 for my $20 buy in so YAY!

  • Home Sweet Home---I'm buying a house and I have a contract on a really nice house. There is a significant problem with it and I'm exploring the cost to repair. I can still walk away from it but I'm really hoping it's fixable. Cross your fingers babies.

  • The Really Cool Thing---about moving out? You can leave all the junk you don't want to fool with behind.

Last week was very surreal for me. More on that later because some things require more attention than a bulleted list can provide. I'll catch up on reads over the next couple of days.

Talking TV

UPDATE: It was a great show and Andre Sam was informative, knowledgeable and entertaining. He served Best buy well. And thanks as always to Fabby for calling in with great questions.

Hey y'all

Tonight on TurnbabyTalks at 8 PM on BlogTalkRadio I'm joined by Best Buy BlueShirt spokesperson Andre Sam for Sunday's interview. He is a Home Theater Supervisor at the 86th and Lexington Best Buy store in NYC and he'll be answering questions about the switchover from analog TV broadcasts to all digital and the ways Best Buy is helping educate folks about that. You can read more about it in my post from Tuesday and the Best Buy webpage dedicated to this topic.

You can join us by clicking that lovely button at the top of this post. Once there you can call in by dialing 646-716-8102. You can ask questions via phone or in the always entertaining live chat.

If you can't join us live you an always listen to the archived show by clicking the player in my sidebar.

Tonight at 7 PM ETon Pointless Drivel Live Mr Fabulous and his co-host Heather will apparently discuss her new front loading washer and dryer. And immediately preceding them at 6 PM it's SnackieRadio hosted by Hilly with her special guest Winter. I'm guessing the paranormal will come up at some point in that show.;-)

All in all a night of good clean fun*gigglefit*

Aural Magic

Baker Street--Gerry Rafferty--1978

I wish I could adequately express how this song floods my senses but I can't. It's 30 years old and it still sounds as fresh and beautiful as the first time I ever heard it. And it always will.

Enjoy.

You're All I Need

Hey y'all

I was trying to sort out what song I was going to do for Fabby's next Duets show and I was at a loss to come up with just the right song.

So I was watching Dancing With the Stars Monday night and as soon as I heard the first strains of this I knew I'd found THE song. I hope you can see the video because Jason and Edyta are simply lovely doing the rhumba.

I've grabbed the original because how can you beat Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye?

(Nickolas Ashford/Valerie Simpson)
You're all I need to get by.
Like the sweet morning dew, I took one look at you,
And it was plain to see,
you were my destiny. With my arms open wide,
I threw away my pride
I'll sacrifice for you
Dedicate my life to you
I will go where you lead
Always there in time of need
And when I lose my will
You'll be there to push me up the hill
There's no, no looking back for us
We got love sure 'nough, that's enough
You're all, You're All I need to get by.

You're all I need to get by.
Listen...

Like an eagle protects his nest, for you I'll do my best,
Stand by you like a tree, dare anybody to try and move me
Darling in you I found
Strength where I was torn down
Don't know what's in store but together we can open any door
Just to do what's good for you and inspire you a little higher
I know you can make a man out of a soul that didn't have a goal
Cause we, we got the right foundation and with love and determination
You're all, You're All I need to get by.
I all, you're all I want to strive for and do a little more
All, all the joys under the sun wrapped up into one
You're all, You're all I need to get by.

These lyrics are just awesome and to me illustrate how a couple can make that deeper connection---striving for each other--there for each other--seeing in each other hope and inspiration. Yeah I know it's kinda corny. I personally think corny can be pretty damn nice.

************
Sunday on TurnbabyTalks on BlogTalkRadio at 8 PM ET I'll be joined by a representative of Best Buy to talk about the switch to DTV. Should be interesting so be sure to stop by.

And PLEASE go see Matty and check out the Blogfomercial he made for ME! It's awesome and he RAWKS!

Belle Abuse

Hey y'all

Mah beautiful Belle has been abused!

Belle is my Infiniti FX35 and she was TOWED yesterday from a parking lot where I am a monthly parker and PAY and have a FUCKING PERMIT ON MY DASH!

I'm still so pissed off that I can feel the muscles tightening around my skull as I type this some 11 hours later. Can you tell ;-)

I sauntered out of my building last night just before 7 PM looking forward to the best part of my day. I was carrying files to work on and my big beautiful 'Scarlett O Hara" derby hat(details to follow in another post). It's catching the breeze so I'm distracted walking toward my lot--the lot I've paid to park in for about 7 YEARS.

And there's no Belle.

I stand there for a second thinking the unthinkable---someone had stolen her in broad daylight----then my eyes stray to the sign. "Lot patrolled by Vulture Towing Company" Fucking hell bastards!

I KNEW this would happen when the company that owns this lot signed on with this slimey outfit. They exploit all sorts of angles to get fees and are not at all above just taking a car and letting folks sort it out later.

So I call and I must admit I was incredibly rude to the poor woman working the desk. It had been a long day and I lost my estimated tax forms and spent a chunk of the afternoon looking and then coming up with a substitute. Then I misplaced the checkbook I was writing that check out of. If I had missed the postman and was needing to drive to get the tax payment in the mail I swear my head would literally have exploded. I apologized profusely to her.

And as I set my files down once back in my building I got the papercut from hell--manila folders are the worst.

Luckily I got a ride to the tow lot and found her.

They tagged her with a number like a common criminal;-(

She's scuffed in a few places--I took pics but I need to deal with these asshats so not posting them. As I was checking out ---$114.08 on Visa so I can dispute the motherfucker---I could hear the drivers on the radio talking about places they were going to 'hit' because the 'permits were still messed up' so they could 'get all they needed'. Blood still boiling --yup.

So when I finally got to my house it was about 8:30 PM. I needed serious stress relief so with the help of some Stoli on the rocks I took the leftovers and fashioned some supper, finally eating at almost 9:30.

Today I'll take it up with the owners of the lot because all the booger eaters could tell me was that it was called in as a 'removal from private property'--at 2:30 in the fucking afternoon. And silly me -I thought that paying for my spot and displaying their stupid tag which I had to pay a deposit for was supposed to prevent that.

There are a couple of cardinal sins that just send me over the edge----one is writing me a bad check--yes people are stupid enough to write their own attorney a bad check (it's only happened a few times and only one person had to go to jail) and the other is fucking with my car.

Somebody's gonna have a bad day.

Benevolence...Thy Name Is Best Buy!

Hey y'all

A couple of weeks back I was zipping through my email and came across a name I didn't recognize. I'm more curious than most folks so I opened it. (and I'm on a Mac so it's safer to do this*giggling*). It began.....

Hi Turnerbaby,

Hope this finds you well. My name is Craig and I'm with the Best Buy PR Team.

Mmmkay.

The rest of the email talked about the demise of the analog signal and how Best Buy is doing their part to educate consumers. He asked if I'd like to share this info on my blog. I was a little skeptical at first but I went ahead and asked him to send me their stuff and I'd be happy to look it over and decide. Of course I wondered how the hell this blog was chosen.

Now I didn't know what to expect because I do not do paid posts and I didn't solicit this. But Craig is right back to me with information I had not heard and that I think is pretty interesting. So I thought why not share? These are taken verbatim from his follow up email......

-Beginning in early 2006, Best Buy began providing consumers with in-store and online information about the DTV broadcast transition including brochures and a dedicated page at BestBuy.com/DTV.

-In October 2007, Best Buy was the first CE retailer to exit the analog business, pulling all analog tuner products from store shelves.

-Best Buy has launched a dedicated hotline – 877-BBY-DTV9 – where consumers can call and speak with a trained home theater specialist to ask questions about the DTV transition and to learn about their options to get ready for the switch.

-Customers will also be able to redeem their DTV coupons and order converter boxes through this hotline if they are unable to get to a Best Buy store.

-Best Buy store employees across the U.S. have received training on the DTV broadcast transition and the options available to consumers. Store employees in positions that are most likely to assist consumers with DTV broadcast transition inquiries have participated in an additional series of in-depth training sessions since June 2007.

I did know about the switch--that knowledge has been out there for years and it's not really a biggie to me. However some folks in this household are losing their shit over it so I can understand how this resource will actually HELP people.

So major KUDOS to the brilliant marketing person/people who came up with this. I've always been a fan of Best Buy-- my electronics, appliances, computer accessories(they were not a Mac reseller here when I bought this sweet little machine--but they are now --YAY!!), my camera, CDs (yes people I am the last person on Earth without an iPod), hell even my karaoke machine have all come from Best Buy. But you know--there might be a soul out there wavering in their shopping choices so why not pick the 'good guys'? ;-)

There's more to their story and you babies will get a chance to hear it live this Sunday---April 20 at 8 PM ET on TurnbabyTalks on BlogTalkRadio. I thought the show would be a great place to discuss this topic and they agreed. So Sunday you can call in and ask a Best Buy representative questions about the analog switchover and how they can help smooth the transition for you.

I still have no clue how they stumbled upon my blog so I guess it will remain one of the great unexplained mysteries of the universe.

Six Words

Hey y'all

I've been tagged by my writing buddy Ian and a new reader Jeffrey Ellis to do the Six Word Memoir Meme. I did two rounds of Six Word Stories last spring. You can read those posts here and here. The Six Word Stories are very addictive---very much like the haiku I love so well.

But this is a little different---a memoir.

The 'rules'
  1. Write your own six word memoir.
  2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like.
  3. Link to the person who tagged you in your post.
  4. Tag five more blogs with links.
  5. And don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play!
A memoir hmmmm?

Six words both revealing and summing up myself?

More than meets the eye here.

I think that's about right.

I've decided, in keeping with my dislike of 'rules', that I'm not going to tag. Snag it if you want. I like 'Six Word Stories' more---I like making up characters more than looking in the mirror I guess ;-)

Thank You Bill Samuels, Jr.!!

Hey y'all

I had a great time at Keeneland yesterday once I finally got there to catch the 7th running of the Maker's Mark Mile. I sent a text to Hellohahanarf to see if they were at the track and hers came back "FUCK YEAH!" heehee I knew it was gonna be a great day.

I found the three wild women and promptly proceeded to lick Hello as instructed by Britt. She tasted good and and there are pics but she has them so we'll have to wait for those.

After a brief respite to change clothes and make my hair look like something other than a puffball I met up with the girls at the Thoroughbreds and Redheads party. This year it was a seventies themed "Studio 54". This big assed tent in the Rupp Arena parking lot was packed. The block long line never died down even during the heavy rain that hit.

Inside the tent were $2 Maker's Mark drinks, a massive amount of food and lots of fodder for people watching.

Hello--ever resplendent in red leather, her unbelievably funny 'little cousin' and awesome aunt

Everything this guy had on was dipped in the trademark red wax. His pants were leather. It was 7o some degrees and HUMID.

ewwww

Tee Hee

We got a neat little souvenir glass on the way out.

We left there and I took the girls to Shamrock's--a nice Irish bar not far from their hotel were we proceeded to have a great time sipping more Bourbon and listening to stories about 'little cousin's husband--omg too fucking funny.

UPDATE: Hello has a HUNG post here including this pic of us at Shamrock's!

I left the crew there at about 12:30 AM. I sent Hello a text at 1 AM suggesting that she do a video post. She texted back at 1:08 "If I could I would. We met the funniest guys." Judging from the typos in her comment on her blog at 3 AM she DID!! LOLOL

I'm meeting up with them tonight to take them to supper at, per "little cousin's' request, "some place cool and a little funky and you know really fun". No pressure there. LOL .

Wish y'all could join us. I'll be sure to bring my camera.

Whiskey, Women and Song

Hey y'all

It's been an unusual seven days that's for sure and it's about to get even more interesting and FUN!

Yes it's the 7th Annual Thoroughbreds and Redheads celebration! And you are saying what the fuck is that, Turn? Well babies there is a marketing GENIUS named Bill Samuels whose family was responsible for that lovely libation called Maker's Mark. It's a truly exceptional Bourbon--so lushly caramel--purrrr.

I digress! They sponsor a race at Keeneland--The Maker's Mark Mile--and a huge wild tent party in downtown Lexington. There's also a tour of the distillery on Saturday. This is brilliant because this is open to Maker's Mark Ambassador's and their guests. And I am one.

And so is Hellohahanarf of Midnight Cliff! She and her accomplices should be checking into their hotel here in beautiful Lexington KY any time now.

We'll hook up tomorrow for what is sure to be a memorable experience. From what I know of Hello and well me *grin* --there will be some whiskey enjoyed. I'll try to remember my camera ;-)

And it's Friday babies and I was powerless to resist Something So Strong....

Be sure to tune in Sunday night when Mr. Fabulous joins me for Stump The Band on TurnbabyTalks at 8 PM on BlogTalkRadio.

Traffic Tourette's

Hey y'all

I'm a pretty well mannered, well spoken person.

I pride myself on the careful use of language skills in my profession.

Get me behind the wheel of an automobile and all bets are off.

I can be driving along in the middle of a nice conversation when some eejit pulls out in front of me or keeps rolling when they should be stopping or begins their turn left early or any number of incredibly irritating things and it happens.

My traffic Tourette's.

I'll let fly with a stream of epithets and insults over which I have little control. It's loud and directed at the moronic driver as if they were sitting right beside me. This is when I invent the most new combinations of curse words.

And then I'll pick up right where I left off in the conversation.

I don't explain cause everyone does this.... right?

Well I know of at least one other person*giggle*

I'm With The Band

Hey y'all

Sunday night was GREAT fun being on Mr. Fabulous' Duets Show on BlogTalkRadio. I LOVE to sing and I think he needs to do it again--soon ;-)

While my song with Fabby was playing a lot of folks in chat were surprised to learn I was a singer with a few bands back in my youth--and no it was not the roaring 20s.

I thought people knew this because I'd posted about it. Then I realized that I hadn't posted about it in a looooooong time and a lot of folks are new readers.

So today I bring you something of a re-post. This was originally done as a meme on December 20, 2006. I was just gonna link you but it's all wonky looking and as I was reading over it I began to edit*giggle* yeah--I know.

These are songs from the set list of the last band I was with. We got paid money to play but mind you it was not our day job!! It was an 80s cover band called The Shades. Our crowning achievement appears to have been coming in second place in a "Battle of the Bands" --and there were 15 other bands--not two. It was a weird group and an--um--interesting grouping of music. It was FUN though---for a while....So....here we GO!!

I Need To Know---Tom Petty--We started every show with this song. It was pretty easy to sing and got people up and moving. The funny thing is I had never heard this song before Ii learned it for this band. That just seems so odd now.

Stop Dragging My Heart Around --Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty--My voice is different from hers but I also found this easy to sing. Plus duets are fun ---are they evah!---and crowds like the interaction. This is one we put on the demo we'd use to let folks 'preview' what they were getting.

All Along The Watchtower--Jimi Hendrix---What can I say--those boys loved their 'guitar' stuff. This was on their set list from before I joined--when they were not getting bookings--for me this was the 'rest the voice--fiddle with a tambourine (lolol) and look pretty' song.

Cover Me--Bruce Springsteen---This was a hard song to sing for me because it was in the wrong key and they never switched it. The drummer was supposed to sing it but every time he did he'd get slower and slower and slower.....

Missing You---John Waite---This was a fun song and I played with the chorus a bit---singing the "I ain't missing you at all" pretty strongly and then making the next line poignant. It was effective and people would compliment me on it.

Head Over Heels --- The Go Gos---We didn't have a keyboard player so they did the keyboard part on the guitar!

Love Has Got A Line On You--Scandal---I LOVE this song. I don't know that it was ever released as a single. But it's a really cool song---medium tempo with nice 'love song lyrics' and right in my 'roundhouse' so to speak. One of my favorites!

The Lonely One--The Shades---Yup--an 'original'---oooooo---snarf! It was sort of a 'reggae' tempo thing with a chorus that went "Don't ever be the Lonely One--get up get out and have some fun" ----yup. It was also on the demo---sigh

You Really Got Me---The Kinks--The amount of fun one can have manipulating this simple vocal seems infinite. I LOVED doing this song---sometimes I would do it straight but a lot of times --well most of the time actually---I'd really 'sex' it up. Shocking isn't it?;-)

What I Like About You---The Romantics--Also a very fun song and very fun to play with.

Hurts So Good--John 'Cougar' Mellencamp--Watching the guys in the crowd when I was singing this song was too much fun--"c'mon baby make it hurt so good" LOLOLOL . We also did Jack & Diane which was easy and crowd pleasing but seems so frickin' long. The bridge is a blast to sing though.

Cuts Like A Knife--Bryan Adams--Hard on my voice to sing but fun. One of the guys was supposed to do this but he couldn't hang.

867-5309/Jenny--Tommy Tutone--I adore this song--I sang backup and played tambourine. I still sing the harmony part whenever I hear it. The number was for an actual phone for someone in Ironton very close to where I grew up. Or so they say....

GOODBYE TO YOU ---Scandal----This is a hard song to sing but the most fun song to sing and my favorite. Hitting that first refrain after the musical break just right gave me an endorphin rush every time! It was the most popular song we did and this is the song that won us second place! So of course this would always be an encore song. I did it three times one night and had to rest my voice for three days. LOL

So there you have it ---a little musical redux for you.

Which Wolf Will Win?

""An elder Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life.

He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves.

One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, jealousy and lies.

The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth and compassion.

This same fight is going on inside of you and every other person too.”

The children thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather,

“Which wolf will win?”

The wise one simply replied:

“The one I feed.”

Trad.

Hey y'all

I've been mulling this important bit of knowledge for a while--there are different versions of this all over and every time I see it I stop and think.

It really does come down to me to control how I want to be----not just to myself but to others and the world in general.

I can decide which wolf to feed.

I know which wolf will win.

How about you?

Urban Haiku

Hey y'all

I got this idea responding to yesterday's comments. I am a freak for haiku and for the Urban Dictionary and why not combine them? Sure I love just pulling terms from the UD but this is a fun chance to be creative and share it with each other.

As ever I am asking you all to join me----go to UD and find a slang word/term/phrase that catches your eye. Write your own haiku using it. Leave it in the comments here or email it to me. I'll do a redux post collecting the entries.

For newbies or the uninitiated haiku is a form of Japanese poetry consisting of 17 syllables traditionally broken up into three lines of 5--7--5.

I'll get us started.......I've highlighted the terms I used---and you can definitely use them again

Girlfriend says let's go
shoe shopping and have cocktails
I'm SO friends with that!

Things are so messed up
Isn't it about time that the
vajority rules?

I adore haiku;
it's one of the many ways
I fly my freak flag

It's nice to know my
accountabilabuddies
are always with me

Sweet salacious words
whispered in your ear? I'll be
your huckleberry

Have at it babies!

*******************

Half Nekkid Thursday returns tomorrow---I've already got the shoes picked out--that's the most important part right?*giggle* And be sure to check out Mr. Fabulous' post Friday for all the details on the Big Honkin' Duets Show on BlogTalkRadio.

Urbane Urban

Hey y'all

I bring you another round of words to increase your vocabulary from The Urban Dictionary.
The terms defined there are often pretty graphic and raw. However there are some more polished and clever terms. These things make me giggle--I'm a geek like that--what can I say? ;-)

These are taken verbatim --- my comments are noted.

Wikimedia

An academic work passed off as scholarly yet researched entirely on
Wikipedia.

"An A on my English paper? That's a fine piece of Wikidemia!

ED Note: I can't believe the number of intelligent folks who rely on stuff they find in Wikipedia without cross checking.

voluntold

The exact opposite of volunteering. Always used in reference to an unpleasant task to which you have been assigned by your boss.

Example 1:

Co-worker 1: I hear you got a transfer.
Co-worker 2: Yeah. I didn't want to, but I was voluntold.

Example 2:

Co-worker 1: You want to go fishing Saturday?
Co-worker 2: I can't, I got voluntold I have to work this weekend

ED Note: It sucks even more when a judge does it.

fornever

1. Never occurring, nor having the potential to do so.

2. A seemingly non-existent period of time.

1. Hanson will fornever be the greatest band this country has ever
known.

2. "I could watch Passions fornever and never."

ED Note: Sooooo many choices with this one ;-)

vajority

The majority of women.

The vajority will vote for [Hillary] in 2008.

ED Note: Vajority *giggle* yes I am eight.

stay shy

As in to keep a low profile. Remaining opportunistic while those without foresight jump without looking and mostly fail and settle for less, in reference to business ventures, sex, and and all things green.

"How you living papi?..."
"...You know honey, I stay shy."

"Yo son, there's all types of ladies out tonight..."
"...Yeah true, but some be rollin' wit VD. I'm a stay shy and bag a
clean mommy"

"Look man these Enron cats be climbin in leaps and bounds..."
"...Listen kid, sit tight and stay shy cause dem boys is twisted"

ED Note: Interesting----I like this one for a variety of situations.

WSD
Write Shit Down

A popular method of organization. Works equally well in one's personal or professional life.

Dude, you don't need ritalin. Just use the WSD method - trust me, you
won't forget things anymore and you'll actually get them done!

ED Note: HA!! The story of MY life babies!!
