Hey y'all
The Manic Monday theme this week is 'date' and with all eyes focused yesterday on NFL playoffs I couldn't help but think of this date and a little play known as RED RIGHT 88.
January 4, 1981
Cleveland Stadium, Cleveland
AFC Divisional Playoff Game
Oakland (14) over Cleveland (12)
Attendance: 77,655
That attendance figure included one Southern belle wrapped in her grandmother's fur coat and about 5 other layers of clothing one of which was my Kardiac Kids t shirt and this sweatshirt(not this particular one--but it looked just like that)

Official Weather Observations for the Day
High 7 degrees
Low -5 degrees
Snowcover 8 inches
If you asked me I said and will still say--fucking cold!! And it had been cold for some time so the field was very much like pavement.
This was Cleveland Municipal Stadium---that water you see is Lake Erie.

The open end of the stadium--the bleachers--contained what became known as the "Dawg Pound" and YUP that's where I watched this game that featured a -35 degree wind chill because there was this GIANT ice machine known as Lake Erie right behind me.

It was so cold that the beer--that's right I said the BEER got a little crust of ice on it by the time you'd get back to your seat---I did the field research myself ;-)
The Browns had an exciting season in 80--riding last minute wins by the heroics of a team that included the NFL MVP that year --Brian Sipe and the ever awesome Ozzie Newsome----to the playoffs for the first time in 8 years. I went to the game with my first serious boyfriend(later fiance--twice--that's a story for another day ;-)) who was from Cleveland.
It was such a miserable game--missed field goal attempts and one blocked extra point by the Brown's kicker Don Concroft (playing hurt) made suspect the kicking game and left the Browns trailing 14-12 with only a couple of minutes to play.
But we were having a blast. We weren't feeling the cold much--everyone huddled and cheered and I'm sure the beer and the very popular spiked hot chocolate had a little bit to do with it . They were our Brownies--they would do it---they were the team of destiny that year. They'd come from behind for spectacular wins all year.
And as they marched down the field right toward us---we just knew the Kardiac Kids were gonna pull it off. All they needed was 3 points, right?
During the fateful last timeout with the ball on Oakland's 13 and 49 seconds on the clock then Coach Sam Rutigliano has been quoted as saying to Sipe if no one was open "throw the ball in Lake Erie." The pass play ----the now infamous Red Right 88---would have deemed a 'good' call if Ozzie had caught it. But he didn't.

The Raiders Mike Logan intercepted it---right in front of me. And at that moment on that
date......
January 4, 1981---it was like a cold steel dagger pierced my heart. I don't think I have ever felt colder.
Ah well.
